Founder of G Adventures Bruce Poon Tip has returned to Instagram after a lengthy break from the app. In his post, Poon Tip revealed that he doesn’t consider social media to be a “good place anymore”, adding that it has become “divisive” and is “ripe with misinformation”.

“I have a complicated relationship with social media these days,” he said in the post, adding that “it’s lost its fun, and it just doesn’t feel like a good place anymore.”

“It’s become so divisive and ripe with misinformation, the proliferation of conspiracy theories, and just really sad commentaries on the human condition. In 2025 I posted 3 times, and this year I haven’t posted on my page even once. I’ve attempted to but it doesn’t feel right, so I’ve declined the inclination when it comes up,” he added.

Poon Tip also revealed he had lost thousands of followers since taking the break.

“I post stories of things I’m doing in the moment, but even those are becoming less and less because they seem disconnected from the natural sharing of ideas that I think social media is supposed to be and, honestly, I think it’s boring. I’ve lost thousands of followers in the process who aren’t going to care if I don’t, and I fully understand that.”

Despite his misgivings about the app, Poon Tip said he was keen to reconnect with members of his audience who had continued to follow him.

“So I’m going to see if I can get back on this horse and try to connect with all of you who’ve been kind enough to stick around. I don’t have a lot to say but I’m going to try to find something. Kind, compassionate and uplifting, hopefully, but I’ve been known to wade into political waters. I’ll try to keep that at a minimum as the world is different now and I don’t want to add to the mess that already exists. When your ideology becomes part of your personality, it becomes impossible to have a reasonable conversation, and it’s impossible on social media without sounding self-indulgent, and that isn’t a conversation.”

He questioned whether the purpose of social media was less about conversation and more about expression.

“Maybe social isn’t supposed to be a conversation but instead a one-way expression? I don’t know, but it hasn’t felt right to me for a few years now. The app formerly known as Twitter is even worse, what a minefield that has become. I remain fiercely independent and proudly one of the OG woke lol, and that will never change.”

Ending on a positive note, he acknowledged that social media can be used for fun.

“But let’s see if we can find fun in social again. Keep it positive, maybe uplift a few people and create change from a positive lens. Thanks for hanging around. I hope I can make it worth your while.”

A veteran tourism entrepreneur, Poon Tip recently spoke at Cairns Crocodiles.
