Extreme weather conditions, including two typhoons, have tricked Japan’s famous cherry blossom trees into blossoming early this year.

Looks like climate change is already having an effect on seasonal tourist attractions.

The blossoms, known as Sakura, have bloomed several months ahead of schedule, which is good news if you’re currently in Japan, but not so good news if you’ve booked tickets to arrive in time for their usual blooming period.

Tree doctor Hiroyuki Wada, of the Flower Association of Japan, said the violent storms have stripped the leaves from many of the trees, combined with the unusually pleasant weather that followed caused the premature blooming in hundreds of locations around the country, Lonely Planet.

Wada said that while the affected trees will not bloom a second time when spring comes around, the majority of the blossoms will flower as normal.
