Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is unveiling a multi-million-dollar renovation and expanded family accommodation on 1 April 2026, the most extensive in the property’s history.
The comprehensive refresh reimagines guest accommodations, shared spaces, and wellness amenities while introducing expanded two-bedroom oceanfront bures designed to better serve extended families seeking space, privacy, and connection.
Throughout the temporary closure from 26 January through 31 March, every resort team member from neighbouring villages was retained and played an active role in bringing the renovation vision to life, reinforcing the resort’s deep community roots and preserving the people and culture that define the Jean-Michel Cousteau experience.
“This renovation marks a meaningful evolution for the resort,” Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort general manager Nigel Fisher said. “We’ve thoughtfully enhanced the accommodations and shared spaces to better welcome extended families while preserving the intimate, culturally immersive experience that defines Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort.”
Expanded oceanfront bures
At the heart of the renovation is the transformation of five existing one-bedroom oceanfront bures into spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom ocean-facing accommodations. Designed for extended families, the new two-bedroom residences feature generous indoor-outdoor living areas with extended decks, daybeds, and outdoor dining for six, creating space to gather while maintaining privacy and comfort.
Bures were rethatched to enhance durability and preserve their beauty in Fiji’s tropical climate, while interiors across the resort bures were refreshed with refinished millwork and flooring, painting, modern lighting, and new bedding and linens. Traditional magimagi, the woven coconut-fibre rope central to Fijian craftsmanship, has been incorporated into beams and pillars throughout the accommodations and public areas, deepening the sense of place and celebrating local heritage.
Enhanced wellness and recreation
The renovation expanded the resort’s wellness offerings with the introduction of a new 900sqft ocean-facing, air-conditioned fitness centre overlooking Savusavu Bay, creating a serene setting for movement. Outfitted with a variety of cardio equipment, weight machines, free weights, and stretching accessories, the new fitness centre complements the resort’s existing Fijian spa and open-air yoga platform, creating a balanced wellness experience immersed in nature. Tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts were also resurfaced to enhance recreational amenities for active guests.
A design rooted in Fijian heritage
Inspired by Fijian cultural traditions and the surrounding landscape, the refreshed interiors blend handcrafted textures and locally sourced timbers with contemporary comfort. The reception, dining, and the main pool areas have been revitalised with updated furnishings, enhanced lighting, refreshed finishes, and rebuilt decking. Landscaping throughout the property has been thoughtfully restored, further enhancing the lush tropical setting that defines the property.
The renovation was completed in collaboration with Langlois Design, working closely with the resort’s team and local partners.
The transformation reinforces Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort’s position as one of Fiji’s most distinctive luxury destinations, offering an intimate, culturally grounded retreat thoughtfully designed for families, couples, and discerning travellers alike.
