Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn has been charged with murder after being arrested over the disappearance of Russell Hill and Carol Clay in Victoria’s high country.
Lynn was arrested on Monday when a special operations group descended on his campsite at Arbuckle Junction.
After three days of police questioning, Victoria Police said the missing person’s squad had charged a 55-year-old Caroline Springs man with two counts of murder following Hill and Clay’s disappearance early last year.
According to ABC News and the Sydney Morning Herald, sources have confirmed Lynn to be the man at the heart of the investigation.
Hill and Clay, who were aged 74 and 73 respectively, have been missing since March 2020 when the two went for a camping trip in the Wonnangatta Valley.
Despite combing the area for 20 months, police are yet to find the pair.
Campers found Russell’s vehicle with signs of minor fire damage at their campsite, which was completely destroyed by fire, near Dry River Creek Track in the Wonnangatta Valley on 21 March.
Police said they identified a crime scene within the Great Alpine area which is expected to be searched by forensic specialists today.
Police have also appealed to the public for information on anyone who purchased a rusty silver/blue 7×5 trailer with offroad wheels between March and July 2020.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that investigators believe the trailer was towed by Lynn at the time of Hill and Clay’s disappearance and has since been sold on Gumtree.
“We are hopeful that this arrest brings us closer to providing the answers the families have been desperately seeking and deserve,” Victoria Police Crime Command Assistant Commissioner Bob Hill said.
“This has been an exhaustive and complex criminal investigation which has attracted significant community interest.
“While we now have the opportunity to put this matter before the criminal courts, our efforts to locate the remains of Russell and Carol will continue.”
Jetstar told Travel Weekly it has nothing further to add on the matter at this stage.
Lynn will face court in Sale today.
