“Rail travel in Australia is more than just a mode of transport – it’s an experience that embodies the essence of exploration and connection,” Journey Beyond CEO, Chris Tallent, said.
“We wanted to create a lasting piece of art, a keepsake for those who have travelled with us and those still dreaming and planning their next great adventure. The Journey brings to life the landscapes, people, and places along the unique routes we follow, and invites readers to step aboard and immerse themselves in the stories and spirit of these legendary trains.”
170 years of adventure
The Journey chronicles 170 years and captures the spirit of adventure that has defined rail travel in Australia. It features stunning imagery that captures the breathtaking landscapes and unique experiences along iconic routes, access to rare archival materials, and untold stories.
From the pioneering days of steam locomotives to the world-class experiences of today, this book is a tribute to the rail lines that connect Australia’s vast landscapes and the people who have shaped their legacy.
Readers can enjoy a captivating array of interviews that delve into personal experiences and unique stories. Highlights include Debrah Munn, Journey Beyond service operations manager with over 40 years of experience and one of Western Australia’s first female train managers; Paul Ah Chee, chair of the Tourism Northern Territory board and a Mparntwe/Alice Springs local, who reflects on the land and how it makes you slow down and listen; and Scott Fels, a Ghan train driver who has spent more than a decade navigating some of Australia’s most iconic rail routes. Along with a poignant love story from Nicola Gray who creates magical moments for Indian Pacific guests at the Rawlinna Station signature dinner.
The Journey serves as both an inspirational guide and a cherished keepsake, making it a must-have for any eager railway enthusiast, history buff or traveller inspired by the idea of exploring Australia by train.
