Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has pledged to donate $1 million in support of the ‘Yes’ campaign for gay marriage, the largest single donation to the campaign so far according to Fairfax Media.
The move follows Joyce’s public plea last month, when he called on the business community to throw support behind the cause ahead of the postal survey on same-sex marriage.
“There is 1300 companies that have published their logo to support marriage equality, including all the banks and all the airlines, and I believe those companies should continue to go out there and support it,” Joyce said.
“They have given their logos to that campaign before and I have no doubt a large element of the business community will be out there supporting this campaign.”
Joyce has been an advocate of gay marriage for some time and has not shied away from using his position as platform to show his support.
Back in February, Joyce made Cosmo’s ‘Rainbow List’; a feature dedicated to celebrating Aussie’s that celebrate the LGBTQI community.
He even copped a pie to the face by protesters of his cause earlier this year.
The openly gay CEO has been at the forefront of the great debate, telling Aussies to embrace the true ‘spirit’ of our nation, which is diverse and beautiful.
In the magazine feature, Joyce said of Qantas, “We want all of our people who come to work every day to feel equal.
“Any piece of legislation that in some way says you’re different, you’re second class, you don’t have the same rights as everybody else, is bad for everybody’s position.”
