Lonely Planet has today unveiled its top destinations to visit next year with the release of Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2027.

Best in Travel 2027 features 25 must-visit destinations and 25 must-do experiences from around the globe.

The Tweed in NSW was named as one of the Top 25 Best Destinations to visit in the world by Lonely Planet while immersing yourself in art in the Red Centre, Australia was among the top 25 experiences.

Other top destinations in the region included New Zealand’s Dunedin and the Pacific Island nation of New Caledonia, with ocean adventures in French Polynesia and experiencing Fa’a in Samoa also included in the 25 Top Experiences.

This year’s list from Lonely Planet taps into what we’re seeing and hearing most from travellers: a desire to slow down, escape the crowds and seek out meaningful experiences that go beyond the obvious.

Seeking rich cultural experiences, travellers can immerse themselves in the Polynesian traditions of Faʻa Samoa, embrace ocean adventures in French Polynesia or discover the unique blend of French and Indigenous cultures in New Caledonia, named one of 2027’s top destinations.

For travellers drawn to the journey as much as the destination, that might mean road-tripping through history along France’s scenic Route Napoléon or riding the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in India.

Those craving a deeper connection with nature can explore the majesty of California’s Coastal Redwoods or marvel at the mist-shrouded cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica.

South Pacific destinations

Further afield, Lonely Planet selected New Caledonia and The Islands of Tahiti for its Best in Travel 2027 list and guidebook.

The two easily accessible South Pacific destinations are growing in popularity among Australians.

Lonely Planet highlighted the South Pacific destination of New Caledonia, Australia’s closest neighbour, for its unique blend of French and Indigenous culture with scenes straight out of the Wild West.

The destination of French Polynesia, also referred to as The Islands of Tahiti, offer an extraordinary playground for ocean lovers, whether it’s swimming and snorkelling in crystal-clear lagoons, surfing, sailing, diving, or exploring pristine coastlines.

Travellers can learn more about the recommendations on Lonely Planet’s website.
