Major airline accidentally offers free seats to everyone

Ahh, social media, the blunders you’ve caused, the entertainment you’ve brought to us.

Both are seemingly endless.

The latest social media manager to have likely gotten the boot?

American Airlines’ Twitter manager, who recently posted this amazing (and very much accidental) Tweet:

AAtweet

Yep, that’s right.

American Airlines tweeted out, “You never have to pay for a seat. Our team will help you with free seats if you arrive at the airport without.”

Seems fairly easy really.

Arrive at the airport sans seat, leave the airport in a free one.

But not so quickly, it wasn’t long before American Airlines realised their mistake and felt the scorn of social media users.

Comments began rolling in from Twitter users, who were quick to take advantage of this incredible deal.

“Going to airport now!” exclaimed @lamvick. “Can’t wait to show them this !”

“Yeah, free middle seats for everyone!” wrote an amused @jrmcins.

Though, some were a little more hesitant.

@Barryspar Tweeted: “Job available: Twitter manager for a national airline. (Our previous manager fired for tweeting drunken nonsense).”

As it turned out, the airline was meant to send the tweet privately in response to a passenger’s query.

Speaking to Travel + Leisure, a spokesperson from the airline said: “We were actually replying to a customer that had a question about seat assignments on American Airlines.”

“However, the tweet is true: customers are not required to purchase an advanced seat assignment,” the spokesperson continued, in reference to main cabin fares.”

“Customers may select a free seat, or pay for a preferred or main cabin extra seat. If a free seat is not available, a seat will either be automatically provided at check-in or at the airport.”

The tweet has since been removed.

Can you say ‘WHOOPS!”
