The search for missing Malaysia Airlines jet MH370 which disappeared almost three years ago with 239 passengers on board has been indefinitely suspended.
The airline said it “remains hopeful that in the near future, new and significant information will come to light and the aircraft would eventually be located.”
A statement issued by the airline and governments of Australia, China and Malaysia advises MAS “stands guided by the decision of the three governments to suspend the search for the missing MH370 flight.”
“The search has been a thorough and comprehensive effort spanning over 120,000 square kilometres of the South Indian Ocean and we share in the sorrow that the search has not produced the outcome that everyone had hoped for.”
MH370 made headlines around the world when it disappeared from radar on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014. It is believed to have crashed in the Indian Ocean, though a number of conspiracy theories have since risen about the whereabouts of the aircraft and its passengers.
Since the disappearance, only a handful of recovered debris has been identified as highly likely or definitely from the Boeing 777, and reports indicate it is likely the aircraft made a “high and increasing rate of descent” into the Indian Ocean, though reasons why are still unclear.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are affected by this tragedy. We have lost a part of our family and they will forever be remembered,” MAS said.
