The Maldives is looking to broaden its appeal for Australian travellers as improved connectivity and rising visitation create fresh opportunities for the destination.
Visit Maldives’ timely Australian Roadshow touched down in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth from 20-23 July with the aim to strengthen industry partnerships and fan the flames of growing visitation.
Between January and May 2026, the destination welcomed 20,126 Aussie travellers, representing a 14.1 per cent year-on-year increase.
Australia is now the Maldives’ 10th largest source market, contributing 2.2 per cent of total tourist arrivals, with May arrivals alone surging 24.2 per cent year-on-year.
A key driver of the momentum has been the introduction of direct Melboure-Malé flights in May, which Visit Maldives said has made the destination more accessible, while raising its visibility in the market.
“The launch of direct flights between Malé and Melbourne has been a significant milestone for the Maldives,” Visit Maldives senior manager – Destination Marketing Shathura Aminath said.
More to the Maldives
Off the back of increased connectivity and visibility, the island nation wants to move beyond its traditional positioning as a luxury honeymoon destination.
“The Maldives offers far more than many people imagine. It is a diverse destination that caters to luxury travellers, honeymooners, families, adventure seekers and wellness travellers alike,” Aminath said.
While resorts continue to cater to the high-end market, Aminath said the Maldives is expanding its family-friendly, adventure and wellness offerings.
“Our inhabited local islands provide authentic cultural experiences, local cuisine and community-based tourism. Diving and snorkelling remain world-class, while surfing, wellness retreats, conservation programmes, dolphin cruises, fishing excursions and marine encounters offer unforgettable experiences beyond a traditional beach holiday,” she said.
Culture is another focus area, with Visit Maldives encouraging travellers to venture beyond their overwater villas to learn about the rich history and traditions of the islands.
“Many visitors are surprised by the diversity the destination offers,” Aminath said. “We encourage Australians to explore these lesser-known aspects of the Maldives and discover the destination’s rich culture and natural heritage.”

Visit Maldives Roadshow
For the Australian travel industry, Aminath said the focus is on building confidence through partnerships and collaborative marketing initiatives.
“Our message is simple: the Maldives offers far more than many people imagine,” she said.
“We want Australian travel advisors to feel confident recommending the Maldives year-round, knowing there is an accommodation option and experience for every type of traveller.”
The 2026 Visit Maldives Roadshow came at an opportune moment for one of the Maldives most opportune source markets, bringing together hundreds of travel advisors and 12 suppliers across three cities.
