The latest anti-tourism strikes in Mallorca have been estimated to have been the largest yet, however exact estimates vary widely.
The National Police have put the exact number at around 30,000, although protest organisers say that the actual number is closer to 70,000.
Either way the protests which took place yesterday (Sunday 26th July) are estimated to have been larger than those of 2024 and 2025.
The protestors were demanding a reduction in tourism, stating that it impacted their quality of life and led to precarious employment.
The Majorca Daily Bulletin suggests that the protests were larger than usual due to the arrest of two women in Santa Maria who graffitied on an estate agency office.
The protest began in Plaça Espanya before travelling along Vía Roma, La Rambla and C. Unió before turning into Passeig Born and C. Antoni Maura and ending at Ses Voltes with the reading of a manifesto.
The protest included reprisentation from two parties: PSOE and Més.
No incidents were reported unit the crowds reached Ses Voltes where police reportedly had to draw their batons to get control.
The news comes just after it was revealed that the Spanish city of Barcelona has agreed to more than triple it’s cruise tax to the highest levels legall possible.
Marc Serra, of the left-wing Barcelona en Comú (BComú) party, said the increase serves as a tool to send a message to cruise lines to “look for other destinations.”
Spain is the second most popular tourist destination in the world with 93.8 million visitors annually.
