‘Maybe if they called it soccer’ – Jetstar takes savage swipe at England following World Cup defeat

Jetstar is known for its more avant garde approach to social media and it didn’t disappoint this morning.

Mere hours after England’s crushing World Cup defeat to Argentina, Jetstar’s social media team took to Instagram to rub the salt into the wounds.

“Maybe if they called it soccer more they wouldn’t have lost at their soccer game,” Jetstar quipped alongside a photo entitled “This is why I don’t fly to England”.

One user joked that parent company Qantas needed to discipline their child.

Jetstar was not the only airline to take a swipe at the England team.

Ryanair’s social media team uploaded a video of someone in soft suit of a Ryanair plane saying “It’s not coming home”.

“England you’re out,” the video continued.

The joke was on them, however, when one user responded saying: “England is out… just like your passengers through the window. 🥳”

The comment was in reference to a 61-year-old man who was nearly sucked out of a plane window following an engine explosion on a recent Ryanair flight.

The man was saved after his wife and fellow passengers managed to pull him back inside, however he remains in hospital.

Jetstar and Ryanair are not the only airline to use social media in creative ways during the world cup tournament.

In what’s being hailed as one of the best social media marketing stunts in recent times, Norwegian was forced to change its Instagram logo to British Airways after Norway lost to England.

A representative from Norwegian even flew to the UK to hand-deliver a USB drive containing the logo to British Airways’ head office.

Other airlines soon piled onto the thread. Virgin Australia commented “May the best logo win,” while Malaysia Airlines chimed in: “We’ll be watching with our satay in one hand and signature drink in the other 🍹.” Austrian Airlines added: “You two fight over the logo. We’ll bring the Schnitzel.”
