Memphis Tourism successfully gave Sydney’s travel industry a taste of the city of blues, soul and rock’n’roll last night, the 15th of May at the Oxford Art Factory.
In line with the Tennessee theme, Memphis Tourism also announced a new sponsor – Jack Daniels! The legendary whiskey maker has sponsored the tourism group’s in-person events in Auckland and Sydney. It will also be sponsoring the upcoming Blues on Broadbeach festival.
The revered Hi Rhythm Section, accompanied by renowned Memphis talents including Boo Mitchell, Lina Beach and Jerome Chism were invited to perform at the event by the tourism board, with the support of United Airlines and escorted tour company Cosmos.
The performance during the event was an exclusive sneak peek ahead of the Blues on Broadbeach festival, which the group is performing at this coming weekend. Those in attendance, a mix of travel trade, industry and media got to witness what makes this group considered to be the best musicians Memphis has ever produced. One lucky attendee also won a trip to Memphis with flights with United Airlines and 3 nights’ accommodation for two staying at the iconic Peabody Memphis Hotel, as well as attraction passes and meals in Memphis.
The acclaimed Hi Rhythm Section have played on 26 consecutive gold and platinum records and are accompanied by producer Boo Mitchell, who in 2016 made Memphis music history by winning Memphis’ first-ever Record of the Year Grammy for his work on the Mark Ronson / Bruno Mars hit Uptown Funk.
The talented singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lina Beach also performed with the group and at the festival, alongside the much-loved Memphis soulful performer Jerome Chism. This all-star collective will be celebrating 10 years of the critically acclaimed documentary “Take Me to the River”, with songs from the film performed during their set at the event last night as well as at the festival.
Chris Ingram, director of Memphis Tourism Australia & New Zealand said, “We’re ecstatic with the great turnout of the travel industry at last night’s event and excited to have given people a glimpse into what Memphis’ music industry has to offer. We simply couldn’t present such a significant travel trade initiative without the support from our valued partners United Airlines and Cosmos.”
The Sydney event took place on Wednesday, May 15th, from 5:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Oxford Art Factory, 38-46 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst
