This week, Benjamin Garcia Cantolla from Nomade Unique Experiences took us to South America and showed us around. And by that we mean we looked at pictures of South America for half an hour instead of doing work.

The challenge for the industry is…

To get out of the box and support emerging destinations. South America is well-known for its stereotypical experiences, but very few people are willing to go the extra mile and explore the developing areas of already known destinations.

There are so many ways to discover South America; kayak through the Fjords of Chiloé or climb a Volcano in Atacama. New adventures are definitely out there.

The things I like about my job…

Managing Nomade allows me to express my passion and knowledge of South America. I love helping both the travel industry and consumers discover their next unique experience.

And the frustrations are…

Not being able to reach everyone who is interested in South America. I still encounter travel professionals wanting to know more and expressing their desire to visit one day.

If I didn’t work in travel I would be…

I would set up a BBQ shop, where I can share my passion for the most primitive and delicious way of cooking. From a Patagonian meat fest BBQ, to a fresh catch from the ocean – you can get the most amazing flavour.

Favourite airline?

Latam, as I worked with them for over four years. I know them inside out and I understand the amazing job they do to connect the world to South America.

My proudest moment was…

When I became a father, three times.

The naughtiest thing I ever did was…

Successfully sneaking into business class!

I try to relax by…

Spending time at the beach with family and friends.

The last time I feared for my life was…

A turbulent flight to Japan make me think twice about flying again. But I still did it the next day!

If I can, I always try to avoid…

Rude people.

I really wish I had…

More time.

The best advice I’ve ever received was…

Try it for yourself and then decide.

I don’t understand why people…

Keep buying stuff instead of experiences, this is how I spend my money.

My greatest weakness is…

Trying to multitask with little success – that’s why I need more time.

And my greatest strength is…

Determination, I will just keep going.

If I won a $1 million lottery (aside from travelling), I would…

Buy some land in Patagonia.

If I was prime minister I would…

Declare 18th September a national day in Australia, so I can celebrate my country’s Independence Day the way is meant to be.

And with part of the million dollars I won in the lottery, I would do a huge BBQ for everyone!

If I could be someone else for one day I would be a…

An early explorer.

I’ve always wanted to travel to…

East Timor.

My favourite holiday was…

Last April in Chiloé, where we spend some time with my family exploring this amazing destination. It gave my kids the chance to experience real Chilean culture and their people.
