Los Angeles’ Getty Museum has issued an artistic challenge to its social media followers, and the results are equal parts clever and hilarious.

Last week, the museum encouraged art fans on its Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts to re-create their favourite artwork using three objects laying around their house.

And boy did they deliver, from recreating Jeff Koons’ work using a pile of socks to restaging Jaques-Louis David with a blanket and duct tape (and of course incorporating their precious supply of toilet paper).

According to a blog on Getty’s website, Cézanne and Vermeer have been a popular source of inspiration, especially Still Life with Apples using with household pottery and gin, and Girl with a Pearl Earring restaged with selfies or a lab.

Grant Wood’s American Gothic seems to capture the current socially distant mood, while Munch’s The Scream apparently tastes good on toast.
