Bawaka Experience has partnered with Australian Geographic Travel to launch a new women-only cultural journey in East Arnhem Land, offering travellers rare, immersive access to Yolŋu culture led entirely by Yolŋu women on their ancestral homeland.

Unveiled this week, the East Arnhem Land Cultural Immersion is a four-day, small-group experience hosted at Bawaka homeland in the Northern Territory. Designed for women seeking deeper cultural connection, the tour invites participants to slow down and engage with daily life on Country through storytelling, art, song, bush food and traditional healing.

Central to the experience is Bawaka Experience’s philosophy of being on Country rather than simply visiting it. Guests are welcomed into the rhythm of life at the Burarrwanga family’s homeland, learning directly from Yolŋu women about kinship, women’s responsibilities, and their enduring relationship to land and sea. The women-only format creates a culturally safe space shaped by Yolŋu law, tradition and lived experience.

“Women’s knowledge is strong knowledge,” a Yolŋu host shared. “This tour allows us to pass on stories and practices that belong to women, on our Country, in our way.”

The launch reflects growing demand for Indigenous-led and ethically grounded tourism experiences, as travellers increasingly seek authenticity, respect and meaningful engagement. As a Yolŋu-owned and operated enterprise, Bawaka Experience ensures cultural authority remains with Traditional Owners, with tourism supporting cultural continuation and community benefit.

Highlights of the East Arnhem Land Cultural Immersion include women-only participation, leadership by Yolŋu women, immersive learning through daily life and storytelling, and limited group sizes designed to foster genuine connection.

Australian Geographic Travel managing director Birgit Bourne said delivering the experience through AGT was deeply personal after visiting Bawaka herself.

“Being welcomed onto Country by the Yolŋu women and invited to learn about women’s business in such an open and generous way was truly humbling… It offers a rare and powerful insight into culture, connection, and the strength of Yolŋu women, something that will stay with you forever.”

Located in one of Australia’s most remote and pristine regions, Bawaka Experience continues to set a benchmark for Aboriginal tourism. For women seeking travel that is transformative, grounded and guided by the world’s oldest continuing culture, the Bawaka Women’s Tour delivers a truly rare offering.
