Deepak Punia takes a moment out of his busy schedule for an interview.

As the newly minted general manager aboard Norwegian Aqua, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, Deepak Punia is at the frontline of next-generation luxury on the high seas.
With a career spanning over a decade at NCL, he plays a key role in shaping the onboard experience for thousands of guests. We caught up with Punia to talk about his journey, his role, and what makes Norwegian Aqua a standout in the industry.
Living out his cruising dream
Reflecting on his journey, Punia describes the experience of bringing Norwegian Aqua to life as nothing short of a dream come true.
“I still get goosebumps,” he said. “Bringing her to life the crew – 1,500 hardworking team members – has been an incredible experience. This is a dream come true for all of us.”
Starting with Norwegian Cruise Line in 2014, Punia has worked across various classes of ships, progressing through the ranks.
“I began my journey with Norwegian Jade as food and beverage director, then had stints on Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape. I looked after Norwegian Encore during the pandemic, then moved on to Norwegian Viva before taking charge of Aqua.”
His steady ascent within the company has given him a deep understanding of ship operations, culminating in his leadership of Norwegian Aqua, the newest and most spectacular addition to NCL’s fleet.
The role of general manager
Being the general manager of a cruise ship is a role I hadn’t really thought about, prior to talking with Punia. In short, it’s a position requires oversight of multiple divisions and attention to detail, ensuring seamless operations across hospitality, entertainment and guest services.
“As general manager, I oversee the entire hotel operation, which includes entertainment, food and beverage and the rooms division,” Punia explained.
“That means everything from housekeeping and guest services to revenue-generating areas like the spa, gift shop and shore excursions. My team includes division heads who manage different aspects, including entertainment, food and beverage, and hotel services, all reporting to me.”
Collaboration is key, with the deck, engine, and hotel teams working in unison to maintain the highest standards for guests.
“It’s a huge responsibility, but it’s also incredibly rewarding,” he added.
What sets Norwegian Aqua apart
When asked about what excites him most about Norwegian Aqua, Punia highlights the ship’s cutting-edge features and enhanced guest experiences.
“Seeing Aqua come to life from the ground up has been thrilling,” he said. “We’ve introduced so many new elements, from the Aqua Slide Coaster to Sukhothai, Planterie, and Indulge.
“Each addition has been carefully designed to elevate the onboard experience, this ship offers more than any previous class, giving guests more reasons to return again and again.”
A world of fun is located on the top of Norwegian Aqua.
Instead of the go-kart track that previous ships have been known for, NCL has introduced the Aqua Slide Coaster, a two-track hybrid waterslide/rollercoaster, a move that added 20 per cent more open space to the deck.
We were among the first to try the experience as we sailed towards Southhampton and although the cool conditions may have scared some punters off, plenty were game to give it a try.
The line moved swiftly and speaking to the operating team, they were confident that the process will continue to be streamlined as they ‘get into the groove’ of operating NCL’s newest attraction.
Why Australian travellers should set sail
NCL’s Australian guests are largely ‘fly-cruisers’ – meaning they are prepared to fly long haul to experience not only a cruise, but also bucket list destinations.
“Australian itinerary planning is extending, they’re doing beyond that 12/14 days into more 18/20, days, which lends itself to multi component holiday abroad,” senior director of sales, strategy and operations (APAC) Damien Borg explained to us earlier in the sailing.
Asked why Australian travellers should take on the long journey to experience on Norwegian Aqua, Punia is quick to highlight why it’s worth the trip.
“Our itineraries offer something for everyone,” he says. “Whether it’s Europe, Alaska, or the Caribbean, we have the perfect destinations. The onboard activities, from world-class shows to thrilling water slides and luxury lounges, make for an unforgettable holiday.
“It’s a complete package for families, couples and solo travellers alike.”
A personal favourite?
With so much to offer on board, does Punia have a favourite spot on Norwegian Aqua?
He offers a cheeky grin, one I predict will proceed a familiar analogy.
“It’s like asking a parent to pick a favourite child!” he confirmed.
“Every part of the ship has something special,” he said. “From adrenaline in the Aqua Slide Coaster to a cozy dinner at Cagney’s Steakhouse or Le Bistro or If you want to unwind, the Thermal Spa is unbeatable.
“There’s something for everyone, depending on how they feel in the moment.”
