The legends at Norwegian have gone and broken their own record for the fastest subsonic transatlantic flight from New York to London in just five hours and nine minutes.
Which is almost as long as we spend binging our fave shows on Netflix…
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, captained by Martin Wood beat Norwegian’s previous record, set in January, by just four minutes and reached a speed of 799mph (About 1286kmph) on the crossing.
“This is certainly a monumental coup for Norwegian as we’ve gone from fast growing to fastest-going,” Captain Wood told the Daily Mail.
“We flew at 33,000ft, right in the core of the jet stream at 193kts (357kmph), which was surprisingly smooth and pushed us toward breaking the transatlantic flight record time again on our brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.”
The previous record holder, a Norwegian Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner captained by Harold van Dam, reached a top speed of 776mph (about 1249kmph), aided by a jet stream which reached 202 mph (325kmph).
Norwegian is Europe’s third largest low-cost carrier and tackles double daily flights between London and New York, using the fandangle new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Winter can be the best time to travel from the US to Europe, as flights are often much shorter due to the jet stream across the ocean intensifying.
However, this only works in the one direction, so travellers coming from Europe to the US might actually see their flight times increase.
The fastest all-time transatlantic crossing by a passenger plane was taken out in 1996, when a British Airways Concorde flight from New York to London took just two hours and 52 minutes and 59 seconds.
Which is, coincidentally, the MINUMUM amount of time we usually spend on Netflix.
