Just days after announcing major changes to high level management, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has continued its staff cuts into 2023 as the latest group of employees notified services are no longer required.
At the end of 2022, NCL terminated 9 per cent of its shoreside staff as well as reducing a number of onboard positions and housekeeping services on their fleet, the latest reports indicate that NCL has now cut back on entertainment including cast members of the ‘Kinky Boots’ show onboard its Norwegian Encore ship with some being sent home in the middle of their contract.
An email shared to Crew Center from a NCL crew member said the company is moving to steadier state of operations.
“After bringing our entire fleet back into service we have reached the time where we transition from operating in a ‘relaunch’ mode to a steadier state of operations,” the email read.
“As part of this transition, Norwegian Cruise Line is adjusting its shipboard entertainment operations.”
The crew member highlighted the severity of the cuts, telling Crew Center: “Just got an email from NCL, they are firing staff without even notifying me prior (to) the time. I have to sign on in 2 days, I packed and even said my goodbyes to everyone and they just fired me thorough a mail. This is ridiculous.”
Some staff that were due to begin working on NCL vessels were also informed that they were no longer needed by the email.
“We regret to inform you that the decision has been made to reduce our entertainment department manning across all vessels and as a result, your scheduled assignment has been cancelled and your services are no longer required.”
Late last year NCL implemented a range of fee hikes for several onboard services, including a $4.95 fee for continental breakfast room service, something that has generally remained free of charge across many liners. Gratuity rates have also increased, with those booking the highest level of accommodation onboard Norwegian ships being charged $25 per day, up from $20 per day.
NCL Holdings is the parent company of Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, however the staff cuts look to be limited to NCL ships at this stage.
