As if you needed another reason to visit New York, now you can glamp there!
But where on earth could you possibly camp, much less glamp, in the concrete jungle? We have the answer.
Governors Island is only a eight-minute ferry ride from south Manhattan, and super popular among locals in the summer. And why wouldn’t it be? It’s the perfect place away from the hustle and bustle of the city – there’s art installations, hammocks, playing fields and no cars.
And, as of late June, you can now spend the night there!
Collective Retreats have opened up a brand-spanking-new glamping camp on the island, according to Skift.
It technically opened on June 29, but a grand opening event is set for July 11.
Dreamy, right?
Peter Mack, Collective Retreats CEO and co-founder, told Skift that the mission of Collective Governors Island was to connect guests with themselves, the land, and other people.
“Collective Retreats was born out of the belief that the travel experience doesn’t need to be confined to physical buildings that inevitably start to depreciate and become outdated very quickly after opening,” he said.
“We don’t pave roads, pour a foundation, or build any permanent structures in order to protect and respect the land we operate on.”
Collective Retreats already have multiple other glamping camps among stunning surroundings – like a ranch in Texas Hill Country, an organic farm in Hudson Valley and a site close to Yellowstone National Park – all which help guests escape the ordinary.
And this retreat is no different.
“With this retreat, we are excited to offer an oasis for New Yorkers and visitors to escape the concrete and grind of the city, reconnect with nature, and recharge,” Mack said.
Guests can choose from two types of luxury tents: Summit Tents or Journey Tents.
Summit Tents go from $500 a night, and come with a luxe king bed or two singles and private bathrooms, plus breakfast at the retreats restaurant, Three Peaks Lodge.
Journey Tents cost upwards of $150 a night and include shared bathroom facilities (with complimentary Beekman toiletries, obvs) and a queen bed or two singles.
There are also pans to add eight Outlook Shelters for next Summer, which are units made from shipping containers. They’ll have air con and heating, as well as a kitchen, bathroom, a king-size bedroom and 180-degree glass walls, so you get the best view of the harbour sunset possible.
The tents come with creature comforts you definitely, 100 per cent wouldn’t find on a regular camping trip: think fur blankets, woven rugs, 1,500-thread-count sheets, a French press coffee bar, Wi-Fi, and most importantly, electricity and a hot shower. Mmmmmm.
The food is also to die for – items on the menu include pan-roasted cod in a smoked tomato broth, short rib ragu crostini, granola parfait and a BBQ-in-a-Box, which you can cook yourself on an open grill. Drool.
Collective Governors Island will offer accommodation seasonally, from May through October each year. And if we were you, we’d get a booking for next year, stat.
