The Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) has welcomed two senior ministers to the events portfolio and infrastructure and transport roles.
Stuart Ayres has joined the tourism and major events portfolio while Andrew Constance will take on transport and infrastructure.
“The Baird government committed to a major boost to tourism during the state election which will set a new benchmark for states and territories around Australia,” TTF chief executive officer, Margy Osmond said.
“The 25% increase in funding for Destination NSW promised by the Premier will mean that NSW is better placed to market the state in major markets like Asia and expand NSW’s events program, which is an important demand driver for domestic and international visitors.
“It will put NSW at the front of the pack across Australia in attracting tourists and we look forward to working with Minister Ayres to deliver this commitment to Destination NSW.
The TTF have long argued the case to improve public transport and road networks saying they are both “crucial to the productivity and liveability of the state”.
“Andrew Constance will have responsibility for seeing through transformative projects like light rail in the CBD and Parramatta along with the massive boost to rail infrastructure that will be delivered by the second harbour rail crossing and new CBD line.
“These projects will boost jobs and growth across Sydney and provide the city with desperately needed additional public transport capacity.
The TTF will work with both ministers on tourism and transport strategies.
“This was a key ask of TTF and we were delighted that the government agreed to develop a strategy to ensure that the needs of tourists using our public transport and roads is improved.
“We are also pleased that a minister as senior as the Deputy Premier will retain responsibility for the arts.
“Sydney’s cultural offering is an important reason for visitors to come to NSW and the government’s commitment to projects like upgrading the world-renowned Opera House and expanding the Walsh Bay arts precinct will add to what the state has to offer.
“The Premier outlined an ambitious agenda for tourism and transport during the election and TTF will be advocating for its early implementation so that we maximise the economic and employment benefits that tourism and better transport can deliver to the people of NSW,” Osmond said.
