With a combined total of 123.5 million days in accrued annual leave, Australians are being urged to take a holiday with this Australia Day Weekend being highlighted as the ideal opportunity.

According to Roy Morgan Research, Australians have 123.5 million days in accrued annual leave – that’s an average of 15 days per full-time working Australian.

As a result, the Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) is suggesting Aussies dig into their holiday stashes to make Australia Day, which falls on Tuesday January 26, into a long weekend getaway.

“There is nothing more Australian than taking a summer holiday and yet many of us have been hoarding our time off work,” TTF chief executive Margy Osmond said.

She referred to the TTF summer consumer survey which showed that, beyond the designated public holidays, 50% of Aussies don’t intend to take a break this summer.

“There is still time to take a much needed break to recharge the batteries before 2016 really kicks in and we’ve got to get back to the grindstone for another year,” Osmond urged.

The survey also showed that, for those planning to take some time out, a three to five night getaway was most popular with 28.3%, followed by six to 10 nights at 21.7% and then one to two nights with 16.2%. Only 10% were planning a lengthier getaway of between 11 and 15 nights.

The cost of travel emerged as the biggest influencer when it came to picking a holiday destination, with the cost of accommodation and living expenses following closely behind with 65.2% and 51.3% respectively. What there was to see and do in a destination was considered a major influencer by 49.3%, with the ease of getting there coming in at 43.7%.
