European self-guided walking tour operator, On Foot Holidays, has launched a week-long hiking route through the Gorge du Tarn in the Cevennes region of southern France.
The new walk brings the number of self-guided walking holidays the company operates to 36 in 11 countries across Europe.
Available in April, May, June, September, and October, the seven-night ‘slow travel’ hiking trip through the spectacular gorge covers 12km-25km per day and is graded medium-hard in effort, with luggage transferred between hotels each day to allow guests to carry just a day pack along the entire route.
Low in carbon footprint and high in cultural immersion, the hike was curated for independent hikers who will stay at a series of family-run B&Bs and character-filled inns and hotels, enjoying authentic French cuisine and wine along the way.
The Gorges du Tarn is one of the most dramatic landscapes in France, snaking through the Cevennes region with cliff walls up to 600m high and pretty but isolated hamlets dotted along the lushly forested banks of wild and turquoise-colored Tarn River.
On Foot Holidays’ new bespoke route in southern France starts from pretty woods and meadows surrounding Mas de la Barque and traces the Tarn River down through the increasingly rugged and narrow gorge, lined by soaring cliffs and traditional stone hamlets accessed only on foot. The undulating track offers breathtaking views and takes walkers through a string of villages such as Pont de Montvert, Cocures, Ispagnac, St. Chely, La Malene, Les Vignes and into the more open countryside around Le Rozier where the journey ends.
The Gorges du Tarn walk includes seven nights’ B&B and inn accommodation along the route, daily breakfasts, four picnic lunches, five dinners, all luggage transfers between hotels, local transfers at the start and end of the walk, and all directions, information and maps. The holiday costs from £1110 per person, twin share (around AU$2,184).
