Outrigger Fiji and Castaway Island Fiji are the first to be issued a ‘green seal certification’ by the non-for-profit Green Seal.
The certification highlight their respective efforts towards promoting sustainable and responsible practices.
Green Seal is a global non-profit organisation that has pioneered the ecolabeling movement with a mission to transform the economy for a healthier, greener world. The Green Seal certification mark is a universal symbol that a product or service meets the highest benchmark of health and environmental leadership.
Awarded in December, Outrigger Fiji was the first resort in the South Pacific to gain the certification. Holding core values that aim to reduce its carbon footprint, the resort has implemented further green purchasing policies that address energy and water efficiency on site as well as the safe storage of hazardous chemicals and has continued to incorporate practices to reduce waste and pollution. The resort has also recently hired an environmental officer whose role is to ensure the adherence to environmental legislation and reduction environmental pollution.
Castaway Island, Fiji was the second resort to successfully showcase its commitment to sustainability and receive the green seal. Having adopted the goals and objectives of Outriggers Ozone initiatives which serve to provide enriching experiences for our guests, hosts and local communities as well as ensure that the properties actively do their part to protect our oceans and help them to thrive for generations to come.
Castaway promotes awareness of the island’s fragile environment — especially the reef and marine ecosystem. The resort consistently improves its performance indicators and best practice techniques, giving priority to employing locals and to sourcing local products and services. In addition, the resort ensures all employees receive the education and training necessary for them to carry out their work in an environmentally responsible manner.
“We are thrilled to have certified both properties to Green Seal’s hotel and lodging standard, as it is so aligned with Outrigger’s larger ESG strategy. Our environmental, social and governance focuses on Outrigger’s ZONE initiative (OZONE) which protects our oceans and coral reefs,” Ben Johnson, area director of sales and marketing, Fiji Islands, said.
“The OZONE platform is renowned for enriching guest experiences, but also has back-of-house goals such as reducing energy, water, and waste while working alongside like-minded local non-profit organisations.”
