Paspaley Pearl by Ponant has completed sea trials off Fremantle in Western Australia, marking a significant milestone ahead of the boutique expedition yacht’s upcoming multi-million-dollar refurbishment.

Paspaley Pearl, originally launched as Island Escape for the now defunct Island Escape Cruises Ltd (New Zealand) in late 2021, is due to undergo a multi-million-dollar refit and will emerge with fresh livery, new interiors and expansive open decks, featuring multiple dining, lounge and bar options.

Captain David Marionneau, Ponant’s director of marine operations Asia Pacific, said he was excited about the latest milestone.

Paspaley Pearl was taken through all the required operational and safety manoeuvres off Fremantle.

“What a successful day it was as we took Paspaley Pearl through all her required operational and safety manoeuvres,” he said. “The sea trials were a resounding success. She exhibited superb manoeuvring capabilities and promises unparalleled comfort with her latest technology, including the quiet Azimuth propulsion system.

“The favourable sea conditions allowed for effective testing of the ship’s stabilisers and bow and stern thrusters, all of which performed excellently and will ensure maximum stability and comfort for our guests. The technical crew were proud to be part of this exciting moment.

Paspaley purchased the vessel at auction for just $5.5 million, about a tenth of the estimated cost of the ship when it was delivered from the VARD Vietnam Shipyard in Vung Tau, Vietnam, in 2021.

The 54m Paspaley Pearl will operate locally year-round, offering 7-, 10-, 12- and 14-night journeys in the Kimberley, Indonesia’s Raja Ampat & the Spice Islands, plus Papua New Guinea.

With just 30 guests and 21 crew, including four expedition guides, her inauguration will mark the beginning of a new era of boutique expedition travel within the Asia Pacific region, Ponant says.

“We are excited at the opportunity to offer our guests a super-yacht style experience whilst delivering transformational visits to remote and unique destinations,” Marionneau added.
