Residents of and travellers to Lord Howe Island a breathing a sigh of relief, after the destination avoided a tsunami threat caused by a major earthquake near New Caledonia.
The warning was issued by the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre at 1:44am (AEDT) following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake over 400 kilometres east of Tadine in New Caledonia.
However, BOM issued an update later this morning that the main tsunami waves had passed all expected Lord Howe Island locations.
“Small unusual waves may continue, but tsunami warnings for Lord Howe Island have been cancelled,” BOM tweeted.
“NSW State Emergency Service will advise the all-clear when safe to return to coastal areas.”
Thankfully, there were no immediate reports of damage near the earthquake’s epicentre in New Caledonia.
