An Arctic storm passing over Europe has surprised Romans, who awoke to a rare snowfall, strong enough to force schools to close and public transport to reduce services.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports authorities have called in the army to help clear the streets and only one runway is operating at Rome’s main airport, Fiumicino.

The last time snow fell in Rome was 2012, which occurred for the first time in 30 years.

Police have asked residents to stay home if possible, but the New York Times said Romans have been taking to the streets to snap shots for social, engage in snowball fights in St Peters Square, and even toboggan through public parks on makeshift sleds.

Here are some of the beautiful pictures that resulted. View click here to view the rest on Traveller.
