A popular restaurant in Peru has been fined for giving men and women different menus, with the latter given lists without prices.
La Rosa Náutica Restaurant, which holds a four-star or above rating on reviews on websites like TripAdvisor, Facebook and Google, has been slapped with a $90,000 fine.
The restaurant came under fire for its practice of giving men and women different menus. Men are provided a blue menu with prices; while women are given a gold menu without prices, a custom the restaurant reportedly defended during legal proceedings because it allows women to “enjoy a romantic evening” without having to worry about the cost of their food, according to multiple reports.
Authorities ruled the restaurant has been discriminating against women.
In a reported 3-2 ruling in October, the National Institute for the Defense of Free Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property declared women should have “access to the same list of dishes with prices included.”
The restaurant is also additionally required to immediately begin offering men and women the same menu with prices, train staff and post a sign clearly stating that discrimination will not be tolerated.
Alleged customers have also described La Rosa’s menu as “misogynistic” and “sexist”.
“Do yourself a favor and skip this restaurant,” writes TripAdvisor user clozada.
“Not even for the view because you can go down the road to Cala and have a better meal. The food is HORRIBLE compared to the extraordinary restaurants one can find in Lima. PLUS, this restaurant is a misogynistic establishment! They give menus with prices ONLY to men.
“Women receive menus without prices! Why? Because they think that we cant [sic] pay for our own meals!
“Everybody who says that the food is good here is clueless tourist who dont [sic] know any better. Take it from a local: Lima has WAY better restaurants than this one.”
