Qantas says it continues to improve its operational performance, again finishing the year as the most on time major domestic airline.

The latest monthly Government data, released today, confirmed that 76.1 per cent of Qantas flights (Qantas and QantasLink combined) departed on time in 2024 compared to its major domestic competitor at 73.7 per cent.

This result makes Qantas the most on time major domestic airline for five years in a row, and an improvement on 2023 (74.1 per cent) and 2022 (69.2 per cent).

“We know just how important it is for our customers to get to their destination on time and we’ve seen really positive improvements off the back of the work our teams have been doing over the past 12 months,” Qantas Domestic CEO Markus Svensson.

“We are pleased that we continued to see year-on-year improvement in our operational performance but there is still more work to do as it’s still not back at the levels that we are targeting.

“We are investing a lot in areas like engineering and efficient boarding processes to further improve our reliability and are working with the broader aviation sector on how we can lift the performance of the industry as a whole.”

Qantas had a higher rate of on-time flights than its major competitor for 10 out of 12 months in 2024. Qantas’ cancellation rate was 3.2 per cent for the year, down slightly from 2023 (3.5 per cent).

Despite it being one of the airline’s busiest festive seasons on record, the data released today shows Qantas departed on time 73.1 per cent of the time in December, an improvement from the previous month (4.9 percentage points higher) and December 2023 (3.6 percentage points) but 1.3 percentage points behind its competitor.

Qantas’ cancellation rate for December was 2.7 per cent, down from 3.4 per cent in November.
