Grey nomads have been warned to stay on high alert as they embark on their summer road trips after a Victorian crime agency study revealed theft has surged to a 10-year high.

According to the Victorian Crime Statistics Agency, 174 caravans were stolen in the 12 months leading up to June 2024, marking a nearly 67 per cent increase since 2022.

RACV’s general manager of motoring, Jeff Ames, highlighted the importance of securing caravans, particularly as many Victorians prepare for upcoming trips.

“With more people either towing their caravans interstate or leaving them at home while they travel, it’s crucial that owners prioritise the security of these valuable assets,” Ames said.

Caravan thefts are becoming increasingly common despite their size. Ames emphasised the need for caravan insurance, noting that it provides peace of mind in case of theft.

“If your van was stolen, insurance could help with replacement, temporary accommodation, and getting you home,” Ames said.

Neighbourhood Watch CEO Bambi Gordon echoed these concerns, urging caravan owners to inform their neighbours when they’re away.

“A caravan’s absence can make it obvious that you’re not home, so adding security measures like sensor lights and locks can help protect your property.”

Both RACV and Neighbourhood Watch recommend simple steps to safeguard caravans, including locking the van, parking behind secure gates, and using tracking devices or wheel clamps to deter thieves.

As caravan thefts continue to rise, these measures can help owners keep their vans safe whether at home or on the road.

RACV and Neighbourhood Watch tip tips to keep your caravan secure

  • Insurance your caravan or trailer – find an insurance policy to match how you use your caravan or trailer.
  • When travelling with your caravan, aim to have the van’s hitch facing away from the access road, making it harder for thieves to swiftly hook the van up and drive away.
  • Lock the caravan doors when not at your van while travelling, including if you’re walking around the caravan park or nearby area of your parking spot, as well as once you’ve turned in for the night.
  • Don’t hide the keys to your van in an accessible or visible location in or around the van.
  • When at home, park your van behind a locked gate or in a shed, where possible, or consider using a storage facility with strong security.
  • Whether your van is at home or away, consider using a wheel clamp for security or tracking device on the vehicle to reduce the chance of theft or to monitor the van’s movements if stolen.
