Data gathered by Globehunters showed that Paris, Tokyo and Barcelona were the best destinations overall for their food culture, while Lisbon and London rounded out the top-five.

In assimilating its data gathered over the year, Globehunters’ analysis took into account several key trends, including the number of restaurants per 10,000 people, the types of cuisines available and their affordability.

Other factors included the percentage of fine dining restaurants versus fast food restaurants, along with the percentage of vegetarian/vegan restaurants in each city. According to Globehunters, the best destination in the world for vegetarians/vegans is Jerusalem, with nearly 25 per cent of restaurants in the city serving herbivores.

Jerusalem, Israel- October 31, 2016: Crowds of people on famous mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem, Israel, before the holy Saturday, buying groceries, vegetables and fish for weekend. Shabbat (Saturday) is day off in whole Israel and people rush to buy necessities for cooking and fridge.

Another factor affecting results was the number of restaurants in each city that appeared on La Liste – a list of the 1,000 best restaurants in the world, sanctioned by the French Foreign Ministry – as well as a destination’s average rating on it.

As well as being the second best destination in the world for foodies, Tokyo also topped the charts as the destination with the most restaurants on La Liste, boasting 93 throughout the city.

The most affordable cities in the world were all from South East Asia, with Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Chiang Mai – the city with the most restaurants per 10,000 people – rounding out the top three, respectively.

Sydney was ranked the 21st best city in the world for foodies overall, just behind Taipei (20), Chiang Mai (19) and New York City (18).
