Nestled in the heart of Pasay City, The Henry Hotel Manila has charm and a sense of nostalgia.

Unlike Manila’s towering skyscrapers and bustling thoroughfares, this boutique property offers a serene escape in a vintage setting that feels worlds away from the urban chaos. A cluster of pre-war houses turned into an art-deco-inspired retreat; The Henry Manila is where history meets contemporary comfort.

Arrival at The Henry Hotel.

First impression

Arriving at its unassuming gates, you’re led down a lush, tree-lined driveway that feels like stepping back in time. The property’s signature white-and-grey exteriors are beautifully understated, blending classic Filipino architecture with thoughtful landscaping. Check-in is relaxed and intimate, with staff offering a quick overview of the hotel’s fascinating story.

Rooms and comfort

The 34 rooms here range from Classic to Suite, each individually styled with a mix of vintage Filipino furniture, contemporary touches, and handpicked décor. The Classic Rooms are cozy but not cramped, with polished wooden floors and large windows that bring in plenty of natural light. If you’re seeking space, the Suite offers a separate sitting area and a generous balcony overlooking the manicured gardens. The Henry is all about the details. Expect locally woven fabrics, retro-style telephones, and even a curated mini-library in some rooms. Beds are plush, linens crisp, and the bathrooms feature rain showers with locally sourced bath products that reflect the hotel’s commitment to sustainability.

Dining

Dining at Apartment 1B.

While dining options are limited to the in-house restaurant Apartment 1B, it’s no compromise. Known for its hearty comfort food with a gourmet twist, the restaurant serves dishes like baked Norwegian salmon and truffle pasta that are as satisfying as they are unpretentious. Breakfast is à la carte, featuring Filipino staples like tapa and garlic rice alongside continental classics. Dining al fresco in the garden is a must for an idyllic start to the day.

Facilities and amenities

The Henry keeps things simple but elegant. A modest outdoor pool set amidst the greenery offers a tranquil spot to unwind. The library-lounge and garden areas are perfect for reading or quiet contemplation. This isn’t a resort with a sprawling list of activities but rather a sanctuary for slowing down and savouring the moment.

History

A modern Filipino experience. (Supplied)

The Henry Hotel is more than a place to stay – it’s a living museum. Built in the 1940s, the property was originally a collection of post-war houses in the traditional bahay-na-bato style. Over time, these homes were lovingly restored and transformed into a boutique hotel, preserving their heritage while adding modern amenities. Each room and corner hold a piece of history, from the original wooden beams to the intricate floor tiles that whisper stories of the past. The name “Henry” is a nod to the timeless elegance and sophistication that the hotel embodies, making it a favourite among travellers looking for authenticity in their stay.

Verdict

The Henry Hotel Manila is a rare find. It doesn’t try to compete with the glitz and glamour of five-star chains, but rather offers something far more personal and memorable – a true sense of place. Whether you’re a history buff, an art lover, or simply in need of a quiet retreat, The Henry is a destination in itself. Best for: History enthusiasts, couples, and travellers seeking tranquillity with a touch of nostalgia.
