Nancy Hromin recently stayed at the Oaks Elan Hotel in Darwin, centrally located accommodation in the Northern Territory capital. Here’s what she had to say about the experience.
The Location
Oaks Elan Hotel is conveniently situated in Darwin’s centre, offering easy access to many of the city’s main attractions. Guests can enjoy a short walk to the Darwin Waterfront Precinct, where they can relax by the lagoon or explore various dining options. The hotel’s proximity to local parks and markets makes it a practical choice for visitors looking to experience both the urban and natural elements of Darwin. We were here for the Darwin Festival, and the park where the majority of the festivities happen, is a nine-minute walk away. You can also expect to see some of the artists staying at the hotel, during the festival, which gives it an artsy and fun vibe if you are travelling at this time of the year.
First Impression
The hotel has an understated design and creates a homely atmosphere upon arrival. The lobby is open and airy, setting a calm tone for the stay. The staff are professional and efficient, ensuring a smooth check-in process. The hotel’s décor is simple yet functional.
Experiences
Guests at Oaks Elan Hotel can take advantage of the outdoor swimming pool, which provides a pleasant spot to unwind, particularly after a day of exploring Darwin. The fitness centre, though modest in size, is well-maintained and equipped with essential workout gear. The hotel’s location makes it easy to explore nearby attractions such as the Darwin Waterfront and various local markets, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the local culture without straying far from the hotel.
Rooms
The rooms at Oaks Elan Hotel are well-appointed and offer a comfortable space for both short and long stays. Each room features modern furnishings and essential amenities like a kitchenette and a work desk, making it suitable for both leisure and business travellers. The views from the rooms, whether of the city or harbor, add a pleasant touch to the overall experience. The one- and two-bedroom apartments provide additional space, catering well to families or those planning a longer stay. We were fortunate enough to stay in the 2-bedroom apartment on level 26 with spectacular views of the city and harbour. I also like to turn the air off in the evening and that option gives you’re the flexibility to open the balcony door for fresh air.
Food
One thing to be aware of is that even in high season, restaurants shut their kitchens usually between 2pm and 6pm and are closed on Sundays and Mondays. If you stay at the Oaks, the kitchen facilities take away the anxiety around finding food on those two days! There are a number of great places to eat in Darwin, as it is a fledgling food scene here now and will only get better.
Service
Service at Oaks Elan Hotel is attentive yet unobtrusive. The staff are responsive and handle requests efficiently, ensuring that guests’ needs are met without being overbearing. There isn’t daily housekeeping, unless you request it, and it certainly isn’t necessary. Housekeeping is thorough, and the hotel maintains a good standard of cleanliness throughout. Overall, the service complements the hotel’s straightforward and practical approach to hospitality.
Getting There
Oaks Elan Hotel is easily accessible, whether you’re arriving by air, road, or sea. Darwin International Airport is about a 15-minute drive away, with the hotel’s central location also means that public transport and taxis are readily available, making it easy to explore the wider Darwin area.
