Returning to Tanah Gajah in Ubud just a year after my last stay felt like reconnecting with an old friend who only grows more interesting and fun over time.

Set within Bali’s rice paddies, this former private estate harmoniously combines its rich heritage with thoughtful, modern updates that elevate its appeal while preserving its timeless character. The heart-warming return was made even more special by reuniting with the team who greet guests with a “Welcome Home”

Rooms – An oasis of comfort and Balinese Style

Each of Tanah Gajah’s villas, nestled within the estate’s tranquil greenery, feels like a world of its own. The rooms blend traditional Balinese design elements – like intricately carved wooden doors and lush, thatched roofs – with the understated elegance characterising the resort’s overall aesthetic. The villas are spacious and designed thoughtfully to provide a feeling of privacy and immersion in nature. High ceilings, wide verandas and open-air living areas create an airy flow, allowing guests to soak in the landscape from the comfort of their private retreat.

Each villa’s design seamlessly integrates natural and cultural elements, from the delicate stone carvings and hand-painted murals to the stunning views over the rice fields or lotus ponds. My villa was furnished with plush Balinese textiles while the bathroom was an experience in itself, with a sunken tub overlooking the greenery and an outdoor shower for that full tropical experience. Small touches – like fresh fruit, daily refills of local treats and evening turndown service with traditional Balinese tea – made my stay even more comfortable. For families or groups, the two-bedroom villas with their private pools offer an ideal setup, complete with spacious outdoor lounging areas and privacy without compromising on luxury.

The Tempayan – a culinary revival with a view

A stunning architectural gem perched with views over the rice paddies, Tempayan combines the rich history of Balinese flavours with a contemporary twist. Head Chef Dean Nor leads the culinary vision here, infusing every dish with local flair and sophistication. The restaurant’s airy design, accentuated by floor-to-ceiling windows, allows guests to dine surrounded by Bali’s lush landscape, adding a sensory element to the already delightful flavours on the plate.

The menu changes seasonally, depending on the availability of local produce, and offers a fine mix of Balinese classics and modern fusion.

Breakfasts at Tempayan are delightful, with à la carte options that span both Western and local choices, including house-made pastries, tropical fruit platters, and hearty breakfast bowls with a distinctly Indonesian flair. They even had VEGEMITE! I couldn’t believe it!

Spa & wellness – a haven of rejuvenation and relaxation

Tanah Gajah has a long-standing reputation for its commitment to wellness and the spa’s tranquil setting, overlooking a quiet lotus pond, provides a natural backdrop for relaxation. Each treatment room is designed to open out into the gardens, allowing guests to feel connected to nature throughout their session.

For a more indulgent experience, the spa offers multi-hour wellness packages, combining body treatments with facials and scrubs using natural ingredients sourced from Bali. Tanah Gajah’s wellness program is holistic, with every aspect crafted to nurture both body and mind, making it easy to leave feeling utterly refreshed and restored.

Cultural immersion and enrichment

Tanah Gajah remains deeply rooted in Bali’s cultural traditions, and this dedication is woven into the guest experience. Twice weekly, the resort hosts Kecak dance performances, where guests can witness the hypnotic rhythm of Balinese storytelling set against the twilight. For those looking to engage further, the resort offers hands-on cooking classes. Guided by local chefs, the classes take you through each step of creating authentic Balinese dishes, from preparing fresh ingredients to mastering the delicate balance of spices that define the cuisine.

In addition to its cultural offerings, Tanah Gajah’s art collection – spanning the estate from the private villas to the open spaces – is both vast and thoughtfully curated. Pieces by Hendra Gunawan and other renowned Indonesian artists are displayed throughout, giving guests an opportunity to experience the island’s rich artistic heritage.

The pool and surroundings – a tranquil retreat in nature

The main pool at Tanah Gajah is set against an expansive view of the rice paddies and is surrounded by palm trees and blooming frangipani, it’s a perfect spot to unwind with a book or simply take in the serenity of the landscape. The infinity pool, with cool, clear water and uninterrupted views of the lush green paddies, makes for a tranquil escape from the Bali heat. Sun loungers and private cabanas provide shaded comfort, with attentive staff offering refreshments throughout the day.

For those who prefer exploring the grounds, Tanah Gajah’s 20-acre estate offers hidden pathways, quiet ponds, and even a small temple that guests can visit. The entire setting encourages you to wander and discover the beauty of Bali at your own pace.

Revisiting Tanah Gajah only a year later was a journey of rediscovery, blending cherished memories with fresh new experiences.
