Embarking on my first cruise aboard Azamara Onward was an unforgettable experience, made even more special by sharing it with my partner. Our journey was part of the 22-night Western Australia & Bali Voyage, but we sailed from Sydney to Adelaide. Though we only experienced a short segment, it was the perfect introduction to cruising.

About Azamara Onward

Azamara Onward is a mid-sized cruise ship with 8 decks and 347 cabins, accommodating around 702 passengers and 408 crew members. Built in 1999, the ship underwent a comprehensive refurbishment in 2021, bringing modern amenities and elegant updates to the interior. Azamara Onward is known for its relaxed, adult-focused atmosphere, ideal for couples and those seeking a refined, leisurely cruising experience. While it welcomes families, it is not a kid-centric ship, making it better suited for adults looking for a quieter, more sophisticated voyage.

Smooth check-in and a warm welcome

Our adventure began at White Bay Cruise Terminal, in Sydney Harbour, where the check-in process was incredibly smooth and efficient. From the moment we arrived, the staff ensured a seamless experience, and we were quickly on board. Our cabin was ready upon arrival, setting the tone for the journey.

One of the highlights of our stay was our room attendant, Peter, who provided outstanding service throughout the trip. He ensured that all itineraries and daily schedules were printed and placed on our table, making it easy to plan our days onboard.

First night: A stunning departure

On our first night, we set sail from Sydney Harbour, offering us a spectacular view of the city. Watching Sydney’s skyline light up as we sailed away was a magical moment, a perfect start to our journey.

The perfectly-sized cruise ship

Azamara Onward was the ideal size for a first-time cruiser like me. The layout was well-designed with clear signage, making it easy to navigate. Unlike larger ships that might feel overwhelming, this cruise offered an intimate and comfortable experience. We quickly familiarised ourselves with the main areas of the ship.

One of the most convenient features was the self-service laundry, which was easy to use and made our trip more comfortable. Having access to laundry facilities meant we could pack light while keeping our clothes fresh.

A delightful culinary experience

Food and beverages were an essential part of our daily routine, and Mosaic Café became our favorite spot for morning coffee and afternoon tea. The baristas and cozy atmosphere made it the perfect place to relax.

We had our first dinner at Aqualina, which offered authentic Italian cuisine. The seafood was fresh and delicious, and the meal ended with a classic tiramisu. Another highlight was the Wine Maker Dinner, featuring wines from Hentley Farm paired with a five-course meal. The pairing elevated the meal, making it a special evening.

Discoveries Restaurant provided a different menu every night, ensuring a variety of flavors and culinary experiences. Additionally, Windows Café offered a buffet-style dining experience with themed cuisine every day, from Australian to Chinese and French dishes.

Entertainment Onboard: Never a dull moment

The ship was filled with exciting entertainment every day, ensuring there was always something to do. From live music performances by talented cruise entertainers to trivia games and interactive activities, there was never a dull moment.

One of the highlights was Sensasia, an amazing party band that kept the energy high. Whether it was a lively evening show or a relaxed musical set, the entertainment kept us engaged throughout the journey.

The trip also featured an AzAmazing Evening, a performance by Mark Vincent, winner of Australia’s Got Talent. The event took place at Adelaide Town Hall, where his incredible voice captivated the audience, adding a special touch to our cruise experience.

Relaxing and staying active on sea days

On sea days, we took advantage of the well-equipped gym onboard. It was an incredible experience to ‘run’ on the sea while enjoying the ocean views. The gym had everything we needed, making it easy to keep up with our fitness routine.

We also indulged in a massage at the Sanctum Spa, which was deeply relaxing. The spa staff were professional, and the tranquil atmosphere made the experience truly special. Azamara also offered wellness activities such as morning stretches, yoga, and spinning classes for those looking to stay active while at sea.

Exclusive Bridge tour: A rare opportunity

One of the most exciting opportunities on the cruise was the Exclusive Bridge Tour, where we met Captain Jonas and toured the ship’s bridge. It was incredible to see the intricate controls and equipment used to navigate the ship. To stand at the helm, even if just for a moment, was a rare and unforgettable experience.

Excursion: Beowa National Park

At one of our stopovers in Eden, we joined the Beowa National Park Scenic Ranger Tour. The weather was perfect, and the scenery was breathtaking. It was my first time visiting Eden, and I was excited to explore a place known for its connection to killer whales. The experience was educational and awe-inspiring, making it a highlight of the trip.

As my first cruise experience, sailing from Sydney to Adelaide on the Azamara Onward exceeded all my expectations. The smooth check-in, friendly service, comfortable accommodation, and well-thought-out amenities made for a fantastic journey. I left the ship not only with beautiful memories but also with a newfound appreciation for cruising. I look forward to my next adventure at sea!
