A long-flagged talent shortage in the travel industry has sparked strong support for Platinum Travel Group’s new gap year program, designed to help nurture the next generation of travel professionals.
Platinum Travel Group COO Ryan Potts announced the initiative on LinkedIn, reflecting on his own career beginnings at STA Travel and crediting the now-defunct brand for giving him a start with minimal industry experience.
“Without Jetset and STA Travel being around post-Covid, the pathways have become limited, which is a real shame,” Potts said.
The program will give young people with a passion for travel the opportunity to spend six weeks at four different travel management companies, allowing them to learn the ropes and engage directly with industry leaders. Participants will gain exposure across key areas including sales, events and marketing.
Potts confirmed the first intake will begin next week.
Industry reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with many welcoming the initiative as a much-needed step toward rebuilding the talent pipeline.
“Such a great initiative and much needed by the industry. Looking forward to meeting your gappers soon,” commented Emmalita Malmberg from Link Travel Group.
CT Partners CEO Matt Masson also welcomed the announcement, describing it as “great news” for the industry.
