Seabourn Pursuit has visited Robinson Crusoe Island in Chile’s Juan Fernandez Islands to provide urgent medical support to the local community which has been without a functioning X-ray machine since February.
The island, located around 500 miles west of Santiago, has no local imaging capability, meaning residents typically need to travel to mainland Chile for diagnostic scans. With limited transport options, this has left a backlog of patients unable to access care.
Ahead of the ship’s arrival, local health officials requested assistance. During the visit, the onboard medical team conducted X-rays for residents aged between four and 71, with scans reviewed via Seabourn’s telemedicine partner, enabling local doctors to proceed with diagnosis and treatment.
Given how infrequently ships call to the island, it’s a rare example of cruise medical infrastructure being used to support a remote community.
