SeaLink Marine & Tourism, part of the Kelsian group and currently up for sale, will unveil a host of new experiences, tours and investments at the Australian Tourism Exchange 2025, which opens at the Brisbane Convention and Events Centre tomorrow (Monday).
“Our mission is to connect people with Australia’s most unique and beautiful places – sustainably and meaningfully,” said SeaLink Marine & Tourism CEO Donna Gauci. “From new product offerings and infrastructure upgrades to immersive cultural experiences, we’re continuing to innovate and invest in ways that invite more travellers to discover the brilliance of our backyard.”
Kelsian group, of which SeaLink Marine & Tourism is part, announced earlier this month that it is exploring the sale of its portfolio of resorts, tours and ferry services as the country’s largest tourism and transport operator restructures to pay down debt and simplify its business, according to reports. Sale assets include Fraser Island resort in Queensland, the SeaLink ferry services, Captain Cook Cruises in Sydney and other operations.
The decision to consider whether to sell the portfolio came just a day after Kelsian’s new chief executive, Graeme Legh, started with the company.
Kelsian, which is an anagram of its former name which it changed in 2021, said its tourism portfolio had generated $160 million in revenues in the last financial year, with debt growing by 9.9 per cent to $933.2 million in the six months to December 31. Last year, Kelsian revealed a cost blowout on construction of new ferry infrastructure on Kangaroo Island in South Australia, and extra spending on projects in NSW. The company has a market capitalisation of $727 million.
“The management team has undertaken a comprehensive strategic portfolio review, and a sale of the tourism portfolio was assessed to be in the best interest of shareholders,” Kelsian chairwoman Fiona Hele said at the time. “The divestment of the tourism portfolio will see Kelsian emerge as a more infrastructure-like, commuter and contracted business.
“Many of the continuing businesses are underpinned by defensive long-term government-backed service contracts with cost base protection, generating even more predictable earnings and cashflow.”
Despite the sale moves, Sealink Marine & Tourism continues to grow both its domestic and international markets.
“ATE is an exciting opportunity to showcase the breadth and diversity of SeaLink’s tourism offerings to the world,” its general manager of Global Sales & Distribution, Richard Doyle, said.
“We’re proud to collaborate with our global travel trade partners to boost visitation to Australia, create unforgettable memories, and share meaningful stories—both ancient and contemporary.”
