The US is famed for its tight border control and strict security systems, but now things could get easier for a select group of Aussies.
The US has recently opened applications to its “US Trusted Traveller Program” – a fast-track service that allows select Australians to fast-track security and custom lines at US airports.
Accepted Australians will be able to go to a booth at select airports. Here they can scan their passport before processing to a CBP office.
Eligibility for the Global Entry program is tight, only Aussies who have visited the US at least five times in the previous 12 months can apply.
Anyone with a history of any offence – including breach of customs protocol or drink driving – will be disqualified from applying.
For the trial period, only 1000 Australians can take part. The application cost is US$100 (AU$163) and the process requires an interview.
If the trial is successful, more Australians will be allowed to apply. Successful applicants will also gain access to TSA PreCheck – a faster security system that removes the need to remove shoes and complete other stringent security protocol.
An easier way Aussies can gain easier access to the US is by using the Mobile Passport Control (MPC), a free app that allows travellers to enter their information online for streamlined US entry. This is available at 35 US international airports.
Australians visiting the US for less than 90 days currently need to apply for an ESTA – Electronic System for Travel Authorisation – or a visa.
