Silversea Cruises has become the first global cruise line to sail from Hong Kong in nearly three years after Silver Spirit set sail on 19 January.

Hong Kong authorities marked the occasion with a water solute in Victoria Harbour along with a dragon and lion dance performance at the cruise terminal where all guests were presented with gifts before departure.

Adam Radwanski, managing director APAC, Silversea, said they were pleased to be back in the region.

“Silversea is thrilled to be welcomed in such a celebratory manner by Hong Kong Tourism Board, as Silver Spirit arrived on her long-awaited return to one of Asia’s most iconic harbours on January 18,” Radwanski said.

“Spirits are at a record high today among our crew and our guests. It would have to be our most anticipated sailing in this region.”

In 2023, Silversea will offer eight calls in Hong Kong, on voyages ranging from 10 to 16 days in duration, reconnecting affluent and always curious guests with the city’s authentic beauty.

Radwanski explained that Silversea would be recommencing business with multiple boats in the region this year.

“Silver Spirit is our first ocean liner in Hong Kong in almost three years,” he said.

“It is so rewarding to the Silversea team after such a long wait. We will have four ships in Asia Pacific this 2023 season, reflecting a significant commitment to the region. Silversea is investing heavily in Asia Pacific and has seen tremendous growth in this market, and we predict a long and successful return to these seas.”

This return of cruise liners is another step in the right direction for tourism in the country,  Kevin Yeung, secretary for culture, sports and tourism, Government of Hong Kong special administrative region said.

“We are thankful that Silversea Cruises have cast a vote of confidence in Hong Kong by making an early return,” Yeung said.

“Not only does it signify the return of Hong Kong to the international cruise map, but also marks another key milestone in the recovery of our tourism industry.

“Being a cosmopolitan city and a cultural melting pot of East and West, Hong Kong is a unique and not-to-be-missed destination of cruise itineraries in Asia.

“We are determined to maintain Hong Kong’s position as a premier tourist destination and have positively taken the opportunity to introduce new or upgrade existing tourism offerings of diverse nature in the past few years. As normal travel resumes, they are ready to give new excitements and fond memories to our friends visiting from around the world, including Silversea passengers arriving today.”
