Smartraveller has raised its travel advice level for Qatar, urging travellers to exercise a high degree of caution due to the deteriorating security situation in the region.

Authorities have warned the security environment across the Middle East remains unpredictable. Media reports indicate some personnel were advised to leave the Al Udeid Air Base on 14 January.

Ongoing regional conflicts could further escalate tensions and lead to airspace closures, flight cancellations and other travel disruptions. Travellers are advised to prioritise their personal safety, closely monitor developments and follow the advice of local authorities.

Qatar is a popular stop-off destination for travellers on their way to Europe.

Demonstrations and protest activity may also occur, with local security conditions able to deteriorate at short notice. Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and protests.

Smartraveller also upped the rating for Oman, previously marked as a safe destination in the region.
