Sydney’s iconic Sofitel Sydney Wentworth today unveiled its $70 million refurbishment, a transformation that ushers in a new era of French-inspired luxury and grandeur.

Slated for November, the renovation brings fresh life to the hotel’s storied past, just in time to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Sofitel brand’s global presence, commemorating 60 years of embodying French art de vivre.

Originally created by Qantas in the 1960s as Australia’s premier international 5-star hotel, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has long been a symbol of Sydney’s global hospitality. Royals, movie stars, and dignitaries once graced its halls, drawn by the allure of its glamorous architecture and jet-set appeal.

The refurbishment has been curated to rekindle the charm of that golden era, reimagining its legacy for a contemporary audience while preserving its mid-century elegance.

Reviving a Sydney landmark

Central to the refurbishment is the partnership between Sofitel and Sydney-based hospitality group House Made Hospitality, which has redefined the hotel’s food and beverage offerings. The precinct now features two signature restaurants – tilda and Delta Rue – alongside two bars, including the elegant bar tilda and the lively Wentworth Bar, plus one of Sydney’s largest outdoor terrace bars.

Led by architecture and interior design firm FK, the renovation respects the building’s original post-war minimalist design, maintaining the classic 1960s modernist style that first put the Wentworth on the map.  The design has been refreshed to meet the demands of modern travellers, with subtle hints of nostalgia incorporated through luxurious materials, soft forms, and rich textures.

A grand entrance

Upon entering Sofitel Sydney Wentworth, guests are greeted by a new bronze façade that offers a sleek, contemporary welcome. A striking lighting feature inspired by Sofitel’s traditional candlelight ritual illuminates the pathway to the lobby, blending old-world charm with futuristic convenience. The open-plan lobby, with its mid-century design nods, presents guests with vibrant pockets of lounge areas and a fluid transition to restaurant tilda.

Innovation is at the heart of the hotel’s service upgrade. Guests are now able to manage their entire stay through an interactive app, enhancing their experience with convenience. Check-ins are streamlined, allowing more time to enjoy the hotel’s luxurious amenities while The Guest Relations lounge offers personalised service in a contemporary setting, ensuring the first impression is as memorable as the stay itself.

Reimagined rooms

The hotel’s 436 guest rooms and suites have been thoroughly modernised while keeping a strong connection to the building’s 1960s glamour. Each room curves elegantly around the terrace, and the décor pays homage to the golden age of international travel, updated with state-of-the-art conveniences such as MySmart lighting and Nespresso machines. French Balmain amenities complement luxurious baths, while Sofitel’s signature MyBed™ ensures guests enjoy an unrivalled level of comfort.

Wellness is a priority in this new iteration of Sofitel Sydney Wentworth. The introduction of a “Wellness Bag” allows guests to take their fitness regime with them, whether in-room or at nearby landmarks such as the Botanic Gardens or the Opera House. The portable gym equipment encourages guests to stay active and enjoy the hotel’s prime CBD location.

Modern conferencing

Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has long been a central player in Sydney’s business and event scene. The Wentworth Ballroom, one of the largest ballrooms in the city, continues to shine as the venue of choice for high-profile events. Updated with cutting-edge technology, the ballroom now boasts one of Australia’s largest LED screens, setting a new standard for event hosting. In collaboration with Encore Event Technologies, the hotel’s event spaces feature sophisticated lighting, presentation tools, and sound systems, ensuring that Sofitel is a leader in both corporate and social events.

The culinary experience in the conference spaces has also been elevated with the appointment of Michelin-trained Executive Chef Bektaş Özcan. His commitment to using local, sustainable ingredients ensures guests are treated to an unforgettable dining experience, whether in intimate business meetings or grand celebratory events.
