New research has revealed that 95 per cent of Australians regret something from their last overseas holiday.

According to the study by travel insurer 1Cover, nearly a third of Aussies surveyed felt their accommodation was not up to scratch, nearly a quarter wish they’d had a sexy holiday fling, and 15 per cent feel like they travelled with boring companions.

These findings led the team at 1Cover use holiday regrets as the theme for its annual comedy competition.

Eddie Feltham, managing director of 1Cover, said: “Comedy is linked to travel … people always have stories to tell after holiday, and often very funny stories.”

And while holiday regrets might not seem that funny in the moment, Feltham said hindsight is a wonderful thing.

“It’s amazing the stories people spin when a bit of time has passed. And we wanted to give people a platform to inject some humour in to the weird and wonderful things that have happened to them on holiday.”

This year, 1Cover has partnered with the Melbourne Comedy Festival in the hope that the competition will offer comedic talent a springboard into the world of comedy.

Claire Hammond, associate director of the Melbourne Comedy Festival, said: “It’s fabulous that our partner 1Cover share our commitment to a thriving comedy community.

“The 1Cover comedy competition provides a great opportunity for comics across Australia (and NZ) to showcase their talent to a new audience and also to win a great cash prize, which can be a helpful leg-up to contribute to the artists’ next show, tour or development opportunity.”

The first prize winner will receive $10,000 in cash, the runner-up will win $2,000, and the people’s choice will claim $3,000.

If you or anyone you know has a humorous holiday regret, you can enter the comp here.
