In good news for our inbound tourism industry, Australia has topped a list of most sought-after post-COVID travel destinations.

New data from Blackbox Research, Dynata and Language Connect has revealed travellers in China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and the UK have named Australia as one of their top three travel destinations for when borders reopen.

The research, conducted for the Unravel Travel: Fear & Possibilities in a Post Coronavirus (COVID-19) World report, examines the sentiments, preferences, and expectations of 10,195 people from 17 countries regarding travel in a post-COVID19 world.

While Australia was a commonly preferred travel destination, the survey was less positive for the US and Chinese tourism industries, with both topping the list in several of the nations surveyed as destinations they will not be visiting in the near future.

Australians identified the US, New Zealand and Japan as their top three planned destinations.

The report also highlighted that within one year of post lockdown, 52 per cent of Australians would be willing to do long haul trips to distant countries, 62 per cent would commit to short-haul trips to neighbouring countries and 93 per cent will be travelling domestically.

Australian respondents also showed their support for the travel industry, after 94 per cent indicated our tourism industry is important to the national economy and 72 per cent said we are well-positioned to re-open tourism and leisure activities.
