Sun Siyam Vilu Reef holds Maldivian Roots Day once a week in the Athireege, the cultural centre of the resort.
The resort reveals the customs, skills and traditions that have shaped island life for generations. The experience begins with a hands-on coconut oil making class, uncovering traditional crafting techniques first-hand. Guests can also witness the intricate art of palm weaving known as Fangi Vinun, trying their hand at coir rope making, known in Dhivehi as Roanu Veshun or playing traditional mancala style games like Ohvalhu Gondi Kulhun.
Travellers can enjoy pandan-infused tea alongside sweet and savoury local delicacies during their stay. Guests can also listen to tales about the history of the Maldives. The centre of this cultural journey is the Malaafaih, a traditional Maldivian feast served both at sunrise and in the evening.
Sun Siyam Resorts, founded in 1990, opened Sun Siyam Vilu Reef in 1998, followed by steady expansion to a collection of six properties across the Maldives and Sri Lanka, including its newest addition, Siyam World, launched in 2021.
