What happens when pigs mysteriously appear on a small tropical island in the Bahamas? You swim with them, of course.
It’s known as Pig Beach to locals and regularly visited by tourists around the world – mostly for the Instagram-worthy snapshots that come out of swimming with the large, friendly animals.
When people arrive on the small, sandy island they are greeted by an enthusiastic group of pigs expecting a feed. In between greeting visitors and posing for photos, the pigs enjoy basking in the sun and swimming playfully in the clear ocean waters.
It’s a mystery how the pigs ended up on the small island Big Major Cay. Apparently the pigs were (luckily) abandoned by sailors who forgot to collect them for cooking, while others speculate that they were a deliberate business scheme to attract tourists.
Nevertheless, the pigs seem to enjoy their island home – and who wouldn’t when their next meal is an easy feat coming from passer-by ships dumping waste or the many tourists that visit the island. It’s the perfect beach bum lifestyle.
Visitors can witness this unique gathering of friendly snouts with regular excursions departing from the mainland of the Bahamas and around the coastal islands.
The pigs have cleverly adapted to being the only inhabitants of the small island, and roaming about on their own terms makes them even happier than pigs in mud.
