Representatives from Brazil, Portugal and Timor-Leste gathered Sydney’s diplomatic community last week for a World Portuguese Language Day celebration that doubled as a showcase of three of the region’s most travel-relevant Lusophone destinations.
The evening, held on 14 May at the Royal Automobile Club of Australia on Macquarie Street and hosted by the Ambassador of Portugal, featured performances of dance and music from all three nations in what attendees described as a lively and at times rousing program.
A significant announcement came from the Ambassador of Angola, His Excellency Mr António Manuel Luvualu de Carvalho, who confirmed Angola would join next year’s celebrations – broadening an event that is steadily growing in both scale and diplomatic weight on Sydney’s cultural calendar.
For the travel trade, the three founding nations represent a range of opportunity: Portugal remains a perennial favourite on European itineraries, Brazil continues to grow its profile among Australian outbound travellers, and Timor-Leste is increasingly on the radar as an accessible, underexplored short-haul option in Australia’s near neighbourhood.
