Sydney Dance Company choreographer Rafael Bonachela has debuted his new work, Pulso, on Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ EUROPA 2.
Born in Spain and internationally celebrated for his distinctive choreographic voice, Bonachela is the artistic director of the Sydney Dance Company, a role he has held since 2009. Under his leadership, the company has become one of the world’s leading contemporary dance ensembles.
Pulso, Spanish for “pulse” is Bonachela’s new work for Hapag-Lloyd and reflects themes of identity, cultural roots and human connection. Through a precise interplay of space, rhythm and movement, both works embody Bonachela’s signature style and deliver an immersive, emotionally charged experience.
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises said the collaboration highlights EUROPA 2’s commitment to delivering exceptional cultural experiences at sea. With a maximum of 500 guests, the ship offers an intimate and refined setting where art can be experienced up close creating a unique connection between performers and audience.
Bonachela’s works on board include Somos, a piece previously only performed in Australia and described by the choreographer as a “love letter” to his Spanish heritage.
Following the strong response from guests, the collaboration will continue into winter 2026. Bonachela will return to EUROPA 2 as part of a curated program of internationally acclaimed artists, further reinforcing the ship’s reputation as a platform for progressive, high-calibre cultural experiences.
On voyage EUX2627 (18 November–4 December, 2026), from Cape Town to Mauritius, guests will have the opportunity to experience both Somos and Pulso while exploring destinations including South Africa and Madagascar. The journey combines extraordinary itineraries with a sophisticated onboard program, bringing together travel, culture and performance at the highest level.
