Teardrop Hotels will unveil the newest addition to its portfolio with the opening of Kalkudah Beach House in Sri Lanka on 1 June 2025.
Kalkudah Beach House sits within a 10-hectare coconut estate, with direct access to the golden sands of Kalkudah Bay, a six-hour drive from Colombo, 35km north of Batticaloa, and an hour’s drive from Polonnaruwa.
The Main House was originally acquired as a family holiday home in the 1970s and known as Eastern Breeze Estate. During Sri Lanka’s 26-year civil war, the estate was abandoned and intermittently occupied by both the Sri Lankan military and Tamil Tigers.
The current owners purchased the property in 2004, shortly after the devastating tsunami swept through the region. Remarkably, the house’s Dutch-inspired arched windows and doors of the Main House withstood the disaster, though the building had fallen into disrepair and required extensive refurbishment over the past 20 years.
Additions include a 2-bedroom Palm Villa, 22m swimming pool and water purification system that integrates the gardens and estate and fills the pool.
The Main House blends timeless charm with modern comfort featuring three beautifully designed rooms:
- The Beachview Bedroom (33 sqm) on the ground floor offers a queen-size bed, ensuite bathroom with a rain shower and direct access to the main verandah with stunning ocean views, for up to two adults.
- The Beachview Suite (38 sqm) on the opposite side of the ground floor offers a king-size bed (convertible to twin beds), ensuite bathroom and French windows leading to the main verandah, for up to three adults or two adults and one child.
- The Kalkudah Suite (72 sqm) occupying the upper floor and offers a king-size bed, cosy sitting area, walk in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom, and private balcony with panoramic views of the garden and ocean, for up to three adults or two adults and two children.
The Palm Villa is a modern size single storey villa that features two Beachview Suites (each 38 sqm) offering a king size bed (convertible to twin bed), ensuite bathroom, and floor to ceiling windows that open onto a shared verandah with spectacular beach views, each for up to three adults or two adults and one child.
Guests can book rooms individually, reserve an exclusive 2-bedroom or 3-bedroom villa, or opt for a full buyout of all five rooms for the ultimate private experience.
Both houses blend luxury and sustainability, with solar panels generating 100 per cent of the property’s electricity and purified water flowing from every tap.
From laid-back beachside picnics to candlelit dinners by the pool, dining at Kalkudah Beach House is as much about the setting as it is about the cuisine. Much of the seafood served comes directly from the fishermen who bring in their daily catch right in front of the hotel. Sea crab and grilled reef fish are prepared with locally sourced ingredients and paired with fresh salads and Sri Lankan curries.
The best time to visit Kalkudah is normally between April and October, when clear skies, low humidity, and calm, turquoise waters create perfect conditions for swimming, snorkelling and other water activities. This period sees minimal rainfall, mirror-still seas, and plenty of sunshine. The rainy season, which traditionally begins in early November and lasts until February, brings periodic rains and changing sea conditions, making swimming best approached with caution.
