Several countries have updated their travel advice for Australia following the Bondi Beach massacre.

The US, UK, New Zealand, China and Canada all acknowledged the impact of the shootings on Sunday, but they did not change their overall safety ratings for Australia.

Canada warned that terrorist attacks could occur at anytime against targets including religious sites, government buildings, airports and public areas.

“Individuals or groups have developed both the intent and capability to conduct a terrorist attack in Australia; always be aware of your surroundings when in public places,” Canada noted.

The UK said “terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Australia”, adding that they could take place in any area inhabited by foreign nationals.

The US and China both issued security alerts for Australia, with China urging people to be aware of local security measures.

Author of Tourism Crises and Destination Recovery David Beirman, told The Australian that terrorists like to target tourists because it gives them more publicity.

He did add, however, that in the Western world, terrorist attacks are unlikely to change the travel rating as the security services are generally of high quality.
